Abstract

Authors´ conclusions: switching from intravenous to oral antibiotic therapy early on in children with osteoarticular infections is as safe and effective as prolonged intravenous therapy, with a shorter hospital stay.

Reviewers´ commentary: early transition to oral antibiotic therapy in children with uncomplicated bone and joint infections was as effective as prolonged intravenous treatment. The results were similar regardless of the type of infection. Early transition to oral therapy was associated with a reduction in the median length of stay of 1 to 6 days compared with prolonged intravenous therapy. This effect is consistent and clinically relevant for routine pediatric practice.
